The Games
In the best-selling book by Suzanne Collins entitled, The Hunger Games, we see as Katniss, as well as twenty-three other children are put to the ultimate test... A battle between each other that will ultimately result in the other's elimination. The games were created after the first rebellion to act as reminder that there is noting that the citizens of Panem can do to overthrow the capitol. Along with the games being a reminder of the rebellion, they have also turned into a source of entertainment for the capitol, which makes the games even more dangerous. The reason that this makes it more dangerous is because if the citizens are not entertained over a certain time period then the game makers have to force things to happen in the arena that will enhance the audiences entertainment. Eventually when there is only one man/women left standing, in the arena, the games are declared over, and the victor is crowned.
Reaping/Volunteering
Before the Hunger Games can begin the first thing that has to happen is the two tributes from each district, one male and one female, have to be selected. Now the way that the tributes are selected is by every child's name, starting at the age of twelve, will be entered in a drawing once, and will be entered one more time each of the following years until the child reaches the age of eighteen. Once the child reaches eighteen years of age, the said child will be free from the reaping of the Hunger Games. Now if by chance the said child's family is in need of food the child can put their name in an extra time for one package of tessera, a one year supply of wheat and grain. Now during the reaping, once the tribute has been selected, if you feel as though the tribute needs mercy or that you would be a better candidate for the job there is a chance for you to volunteer in their place, which is very common in the career districts but is unheard of in the outlier districts like district 12, Katniss's home district.
Chariots/Interviews
Once the tributes have been chosen, and they have been transported to the capitol of Panem, all of the tributes are interviewed and put into a parade. The purpose of both of these events are for the audience to get to know the tributes, so that they can decide on who they will want to support during the games. During the parade it is customary for the tributes to represent their districts through the clothes they wear during the event, but the stylists have to be careful and not under or over do it because this could result in jealousy from the other tributes or a lack of remembrance from the audience. For example, because Katniss and Peeta are from the coal mining district they wore a suit that made it look as though they were on fire because you burn the coal to use it, which draws the audience's attention to them, but, as seen in the book, the other tributes are angered at them for outshining them. As you can see from this example the stylists do have to be very careful about what they choose to represent the districts.
Training
Because all of the tributes, except for the ones from the career districts, have had no training in combat and survival it seems only fair to the capitol to allow them to be trained before being put into the arena. Once the tributes have arrived in the capitol, and have gone through the parade, the tributes are allowed to roam free in the state of the art training center that can train them on anything from camouflaging themselves to spear throwing. Now after a few days in the training center each of the tributes, one by one, go through a private session with the gamemakers, which allows the tribute to be ranked on a scale from one to twelve based on the skills they have acquired in the their training. Once the scores have all been accumulated, they are televised across the whole country Panem, so that the citizens can know who they would like to place bets on or sponsor during the games.
Known Victors
The only victor that we know about, in The Hunger Games, is Haymitch Abernathy who won the games by outsmarting the other tributes. Now because he won his hunger games he has had to train all of the tributes following his win, from district 12, which has resulted in him drinking away all of his guilt of allowing his tributes to die in the arena.
